At the recent Changing Life and Destiny Conference, Taron Fletcher — a member of the Hardy Nutritionals science team — delivered a presentation that reframes one of the most pressing questions in modern healthcare: why, despite decades of advances in psychiatry, do mental disorders remain a leading cause of disability worldwide?
Taron’s answer is both scientifically grounded and practically hopeful. Watch the full presentation below, or read on for a summary of the key findings.
“Energy is the missing dimension in medicine. If we think of health as energy, it inspires us to ask different questions.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference

That single reframe — health as energy — opens a door that neurotransmitter-focused medicine has largely left closed. We see high rates of partial responses, frequent relapses, and overlapping diagnoses, suggesting that something fundamental is being missed about how these symptoms arise.
Taron opened by tracing the origin story of Hardy Nutritionals to an observation from the world of animal nutrition. David Hardy, a biologist with decades of experience in livestock nutrition, noticed that broad-spectrum supplementation — supplying the full spectrum of vitamins and minerals — could improve not only the physical health of animals but also their psychological health. Pigs packed into crowded pens become restless, irritable, and aggressive. Increasing the concentration of vitamins and minerals in their food calmed them down.
That observation led to a question: could something similar be happening in humans? When a fellow community member described the symptoms of bipolar disorder — dramatic mood swings, explosive rage, and severe emotional dysregulation — David recognized a striking parallel. A broad-spectrum micronutrient formula was developed, tried, and found to work. That discovery became the foundation of what is now Hardy Nutritionals.
“With animals, keeping veterinary costs to a minimum is what is lucrative. We’re only interested in making money when we can help people get well.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
Taron walked the audience through the neuroscience of why nutrition is so mechanistically relevant to mental health. The brain accounts for just 2% of body mass, yet consumes one-fifth of the body’s total energy — as much as all skeletal muscles combined.
“Think of it this way: your brain is like a very small car with a very large engine. That high energy consumption is mainly due to the cost of restoring the sodium-potassium balance after an action potential. It takes a lot of ATP to pump those ions back and forth.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
Because the brain has limited energy reserves, it must constantly generate ATP to keep up. When demand exceeds production, the brain’s information-processing and regulatory capacity can falter — much like a brownout on an electrical grid. It is now well recognized that mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are shared mechanisms underlying major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and other mental health conditions.
The brain’s regulatory systems are powered by enzymes, and approximately half of all human enzymes require at least one essential cofactor to function. Those cofactors are vitamins and minerals. As Taron explained, cofactor-dependent enzymes function in direct proportion to cofactor concentration — if you only have half the cofactor you need, only half the enzymes can do the work they need to do.
“The brain does not run on one nutrient at a time. It depends on a coordinated network of essential vitamins and minerals working together.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
This is highly relevant today. Taron cited recent NHANES data showing that more than fifty percent of caloric intake in Western societies now comes from ultra-processed foods.
“We’re getting the same or more calories, but we’re eliminating at least half of the essential nutrient intake that our parents and grandparents consumed. Could this be connected to what we’re seeing with respect to mental health?” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
Taron then walked through a series of independent double-blind, placebo-controlled trials conducted on Hardy’s broad-spectrum formula — none of which were funded by Hardy Nutritionals, a point he emphasized at the outset.
“The clinical trials I’m going to highlight — even though they’re done on our product — we did not pay for those studies to be done. They are completely independent and arm’s length, which adds greater credibility to the data.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
In a randomized controlled trial of eighty adults diagnosed with ADHD and mood dysregulation, the micronutrient group experienced more than twice the improvement in core ADHD symptoms — including attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity — compared to placebo, alongside a significant reduction in comorbid depressive symptoms. A one-year follow-up confirmed that clinical improvements were sustained in those who continued the supplement.
A parallel study in children aged seven to 12 found that 47% of those on micronutrients were rated as much to very much improved, compared to 28% on placebo. Researchers observed profound reductions in severe emotional dysregulation — including explosive temper and peer conflict. The micronutrient group also showed healthy growth trajectories, in contrast to stimulant medications, which are known to suppress appetite and inhibit growth.

A larger multi-center double-blind trial replicated these results. 54% of individuals in the micronutrient group responded within eight weeks, defined as much to very much improved on the clinical global impression scale — compared to just 18% in the placebo group. That is three times as many responders. Researchers also observed holistic benefits to global function and reductions in disruptive mood dysregulation. Notably, the Pediatric Adverse Event Rating Scale — designed to track side effects — revealed a treatment effect: the placebo group actually experienced more anxiety than the nutrient group.

The Nomad Trial followed one hundred and fifty adults with self-reported depression and anxiety that impaired their daily functioning. The micronutrient group showed a significantly faster decline in symptoms compared to placebo. At the one-year mark, those adhering to the micronutrient regimen experienced significantly greater reductions in health anxiety and maintained their improved function.
In a trial of 88 medication-free pregnant women with antenatal depression, the micronutrient group demonstrated statistically significant superiority in clinician-rated global improvement, along with significantly greater improvements in sleep quality and overall global function. Women with higher scores on measures of personality difficulties — typically a harder-to-treat subgroup — showed particularly strong responses.
A recently published eight-week trial enrolled one hundred and thirty-two unmedicated teenagers ages twelve to seventeen with moderate to severe irritability. The micronutrient group showed significant enhancements in emotional dysregulation compared to placebo, with particularly pronounced benefits in youth diagnosed with disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). Researchers also noted a decrease in self-reported suicidal ideation in the micronutrient group.
Among the most compelling evidence Taron presented was a natural experiment during the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes in New Zealand. Seventy-four percent of those taking micronutrients showed significant improvement in depression, anxiety, and stress. At a slightly higher dose, improvements also extended to mood and energy. The broad-spectrum formula produced more than double the beneficial effect compared to a commercially available supplement in three published double-blind trials, despite the latter containing only seven to eight ingredients versus thirty-eight in the broad-spectrum formula.

Taron closed his presentation with a summary that captures the Hardy Nutritionals philosophy at its core: broad-spectrum micronutrients appear to reduce functional bottlenecks in energy metabolism, improving the resilience of how the brain functions — not by targeting a single neurotransmitter pathway, but by supporting the regulatory systems that govern mood, behavior, and stress response at a foundational level.
“Supporting bioenergetic capacity — the energy capacity of the brain — is both plausible, testable, and certainly relevant to mental health.” — Taron Fletcher, Changing Life and Destiny Conference
He was also careful to set appropriate expectations. Broad-spectrum micronutrients are not a panacea, nor a replacement for acute psychiatric stabilization. Some individuals may benefit from practitioner guidance before beginning. But for the vast majority, the science makes a compelling case for starting with the foundation.
“Nutrition isn’t the only factor in mental health, but it’s probably the most overlooked factor. It’s too simple. Despite its being essential, it’s often overlooked — an afterthought at best. But nutrition is the foundation that gives us the ability to benefit from those other factors: exercise, interpersonal relationships, and more.” — Dr. Bonnie Kaplan, as cited by Taron Fletcher

Before reaching for foreign chemicals — substances not essential to the body — Taron invited the audience to test a foundational, energy-systems approach to mental health: providing the brain with the broad-spectrum cofactors it needs to function as it was designed to.
